Pottery in Langza , Spiti Valley

Travel

Travelling brings us so many endearing experiences, especially when we travel interacting with the local lives through our route. While volunteering in Langza, a scenic village in Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh I was introduced to one such culture. Pottery has been a fascinating art practice for me but until I got my hands dirty, I wasn’t aware of various technicalities into it. No wonder it’s not a child’s play At 5pm sharp, Dorji, my homestay host, twoke me up to show me the art. First we set up the room by cleaning the wheel, collecting clay and getting fresh water….

An afternoon at Swayumbhunath , Nepal

Travel

We headed towards Swayumbhunath temple on a bright warm sunny May afternoon. Situated on the hilltop at western side of Kathmandu it’s around half an hour journey from Kamalpokhri the central part of Kathmandu. Although one can take various approaches towards the shrine, either the gradual rise or the young and energetic ones may contemplate trying out the steep stairway at the eastern end of the hill. Commonly known as Monkey temple as its infested with monkeys, this place is an ideal coexistence of Hinduism and Buddhism. The entrance is free for Nepali residents, however Indians are charged a nominal…

There were times that we would spend weekends shopping in malls, finding parking and then return home tired instead of feeling happy and content with shopping done. Now after moving to South of India where choices of gifts sometimes are less and not knowing the right places to search for , I decided first time to shop online. Now I wasnt buying for me. I was buying for a family which had been extremely kind to me and decided to support my stay while I was in Trivandrum. The family Karan, Rachna and their lovely daughter Aanya made my visit in…

Kratie, along the banks of Mekong river

Travel

My bus to Kampong Cham, which supposed to be super-fast VIP one, was scheduled at 6 in the morning from Siem Reap and pick was to be at 5.30. Getting up at 5, when the whole hotel was still sleeping, I entered the lobby to wait for my pick up. The whole hotel staffs were snoring loudly and I decided to wait outside instead. The morning was a little hazy, but still quite warm. The mosquitoes kept zooming around my ear trying to irritate my already sleepy mind further. The pick-up van arrived, insides of which were modified to allow…

Crossing the border into Laos, first stop: Vientiane

Travel

Our long bus journey started in Hanoi, in a sleeper bus of ok quality. I had no idea how long it would take and hence I decided to kill the time by sleeping as much as I could. Next day, early morning at around 5, our bus took a long halt. Getting up to see what was going on, I saw a number of buses and trucks on a muddy track, surrounded by green mountains and ever-present mist. Finally, our driver announced that it was the border crossing checkpoint! We got down of the bus, passports in hands, looking for…

MEZZO MEZZO – MEZZOGIORNO Delights by Chef Davide Cananzi

Food

For a vegetarian, to sample authentic South Italian cuisine, at the hands of a renowned chef from the Mariott stable, is in itself an education in cuisine appreciation.  Especially an interactive, sharp, experienced and sensitive chef, like Davide Cananzi (pronounced David with an E, if you will). From his attention to detail, his sharp culinary insight, his sharing of his experiences -to being a brilliant host for the evening, it was a pleasure to know, understand and sensitise to the flourishing and yummy Mezzogiorno cuisine. A motley group of foodies makes for very interesting, varied and deep conversation not…

Virupaksha Temple at Hampi – An Architectural Marvel

Travel

The Virupaksha temple is one of the most important structures located amongst the ruins at Hampi. Hampi is about  12kms from the town of Hospet in Karnataka State.  Hospet is about 419 kms from Bangalore by train. The ruins of Hampi have been accorded the status of the UNESCO World Heritage site and are under the protection and maintenance of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The temple has surprisingly survived destruction in the hands of the invaders since the battle of Talikota in the 16th century when many of the monuments were systematically destroyed or defaced by the invading armies.  Today,…

Searching for the Heart – Day 1

Travel

“Eagles come in all shapes and sizes, but you will recognize them chiefly by their attitudes.” This quote by notable economist E. F. Schumacher summarizes how a group of enthusiastic explorers set out to find a path to reach a water body only seen by eye in the sky – a satellite. “Where Eagles Dare” is a group of people who like to take adventure to the next level in the form of high altitude hikes, walking and riding on ice and being the laps of Himalayas in the most unusual seasons. Browsing through Google Earth, group founder Tilak Soni…
